The Nonprofit Chamber of Palm Beach County has established the John A. Foley, Esq. Legal Scholarship Fund to honor a man who dedicated his life and career to the nonprofit community in Palm Beach County.
It is open to current Florida legal students who plan to practice public interest law. The successful applicant will receive $2,000.
At Legal Aid, John wore many hats. These included staff attorney and supervising attorney of the Ryan White AIDS Program, the Medical Legal Project, the Wage Dispute Project, and most notably the Nonprofit Legal Assistance Project. John distinguished himself early on fighting to maintain the rights and dignity of those facing discrimination because of HIV/AIDS. In 1997, he received the Legal Aid Society’s “Human Rights Advocacy Award” for his work representing a person living with HIV who was wrongfully denied health insurance.
Recognizing the need that other local non-profits had for legal counsel, John created the Nonprofit Legal Assistance Project. For over 20 years, John provided in-house counsel services to over 60 nonprofit organizations throughout Florida, in all areas of operation with an emphasis on labor and employment, human resources, governance, corporate law and transactional matters. He received his law degree from the University of Miami. John Foley died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 60.
Following John’s death in 2021 from cancer at the age of 60, The Nonprofit Chamber, in partnership with the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, decided to honor John’s memory through this scholarship to be awarded to a Florida law student who plans to practice Public Interest Law as John did.
